The Michael Dwyer Memorial Prize 2016

Congratulations are in order for our Operations Director, Andrew Kneen who was recently awarded The Michael Dwyer Memorial Prize 2016 for his outstanding progress in the Agricultural Engineering industry.

The criteria was tough, bearing in mind the interests of Michael in the training and formation of young engineers, the IAgrE Council decided that the prize shall be awarded to  a mid-career engineer who has made outstanding progress in the agricultural engineering industry.

The Institution of Agricultural Engineers stated....

Andrew Kneen is a mid-career agricultural engineer who has made outstanding progress in the agricultural engineering industry.

The design, development and construction of crop sprayers for making application to field crops, particularly self-propelled units, is an area of agricultural engineering where the UK has remained strong for at least the past two decades.  There are more than five main manufacturers of this type of equipment in the UK commanding a substantial share of the home market and with important export sales.  In 2001, Andrew Kneen joined the largest of these companies, Househam Sprayers as an engineer with an HND qualification.  His career within the company developed rapidly – he became Technical Support/Development Engineer in 2005, Engineering Manager in 2007, Engineering Director in 2009 and in 2014 became the Operations Director for Househam Sprayers Ltd.

Andrew's technical knowledge regarding all aspects of boom sprayer design, particularly self-propelled machines, is excellent and among the best in the world.  He is equally happy discussing the technical details of a variable speed transmission system as he is describing the boom plumbing and control arrangements on the latest versions of this type of machine.  His technical experience in all aspects of design, development and evaluation of crop sprayers together with a first class knowledge of the market for such machines means that he is now able to make very valuable contributions to the work of the company that employs him (Househam Sprayers Ltd) as well to the broader agricultural engineering community.  He is well respected by colleagues and peers within the industry sector – a quiet, modest person who has achieved a lot.

Andrew Kneen therefore fully meets the criteria for the Michael Dwyer Memorial Prize and is a very worthy winner of the award in 2016.
